The battle axes of the High Middle Ages that were preferred by the Vikings are probably advanced developments of Frankish throwing axes. Their blades have straight upper edges, while the sharp edges were usually curved toward the handle. Their handles were too long to throw; instead, they were used in close combat with shields.

In the ranks of the Huscarls, the bodyguard of Scandinavian nobles and kings, axes of various sizes were a very popular weapon. The Huscarls often used the Danish axe with their left hand to attack the side of the enemy not protected by a shield.
