Synthetic Sparring Swords

Red Dragon HEMA Synthetic Sparring Swords are probably the most well-known swords on the HEMA scene. They were developed in conjunction with Dave Rawlings of the London Longsword Academy back in 2010 and can now be found on every continent. The goal was to produce an alternative practice sword to the wooden wasters and shinai used at the time. These swords had to be durable enough for prolonged use and safe for sparring (with the correct protective kit). The result was a sword that exceeded all expectations.
Red Dragon HEMA Synthetic Sparring Swords are used in clubs all over the world. They are designed to be flexible and therefore safe in the thrust. As such, they require a lot less protective kit than when sparring with steel swords. The smooth edges, although not ideal for binding, ensure that friction burns are unlikely when contact is made on bare skin during practice or sparring. This high level of safety makes them the perfect choice for beginners or people with little protective kit.
As a result of listening to feedback, the synthetic swords are currently in their 4th generation. The special blend of plastics specially formulated for our blades has changed with technological advances over the years. The blades are now the most durable they have ever been and breakages are incredibly rare.
Red Dragon HEMA Synthetic Sparring Swords are of modular construction with a range of different pommels, guards, grips and blades to suit your needs. Guards are available in a range of different styles, from traditional cross-guards to basket hilt and messer guards. They are also available in a range of colours including glow in the dark! To increase the weight and alter the balance of your sword, steel hilt fittings are also available. Red Dragon HEMA Synthetic Sparring Swords are manufactured in the U.K to very high standards. They are manufactured from a special blend of plastic formulated in the U.K. to suit our requirements. Recycled materials are used when available. Whilst this does not reflect in the quality of the product it does lessen the impact on the planet.
