Our Jousting Close Helm is made in Italy. It is constructed from 20 gauge steel with a lacquered finish and features 1 piece tilting visor that can be raised and lowered. The visor is unusual in that is does not feature ventilation holes on either side. As such this helmet would get hot and stuffy in combat and was probably designed for jousting where the visor would only be lowered during the charge. Great Helm
The Great Helm evolved out of a need for greater protection for the head and neck and was first seen towards the end of the 12th century. It was a very popular style of helmet worn by knights and men-at-arms in most European armies and was also worn by knights of the crusading orders such as the Knights Templar. It offered superior protection to the open face nasal helmet of the previous century but restricted vision and could become hot and stuffy - especially on crusade.
Our Great Helm is constructed from 18 gauge lacquered steel and is great for display or as part of a costume. Does not come with a liner and not recommended for re-enactment.

Templar Transitional Helmet
The Templar Helmet is a style of transitional helmet that dates from the 12th - 13th century. This was a period when the open-faced flat topped helmets gradually evolved into the more protective Great Helms of later periods. The addition of a full face visor afforded much more protection than the simple nasal bar of the previous centuries – at the cost of better vision and ventilation.
Our Templar Transitional Helm is constructed from lacquered 18 gauge steel and features a leather chin strap. Does not come with a helmet liner. Not recommended for contact re-enactment.
