  • Early Bascinet with Visor - 14 gauge

Bascinets were one of the favourite choices of helmet in the 14th century and 15th century. It was probably an evolution of the cabasset used under the helmet by both cavalry and infantry. Some variations of this item were used with coif instead of aventail.  This design is based on several artistic representations dating from the first quarter of the 14th century and is common in the Spanish peninsula. Its pyramidal grill system in the visor offers an excellent defence as well as an optimal vision. The visor is foldable and has a pin system that allows a quick unmount if needed.

Made in 2mm steel with 1.6mm visor. Steel thickness may vary due to the handcrafted methods used in its manufacture. The steel is untreated and may have rust. To protect the steel you may rub it with mineral or synthetic oil. Leather chin strap included.

  • Sugar Loaf Helmet with Visor – 14 gauge - Large

The Sugar Loaf helmet, so called because of its similarity in shape to the traditional "Sugar Loaves" that sugar was traditionally sold in, was a later variant of the Great Helm and was used throughout the 13th and 14th Centuries. This style of helmet saw use in many famous battles of the period and was also worn by Crusaders. The domed top was much better at deflecting blows than the flat topped Great Helms.

Our Sugar Loaf Helmet with Visor from GDFB, built to comply with SCA regulations, is both aesthetically appealing and highly functional. Crafted in 14 gauge steel with its great cross overlaid in brass, the helm has a movable visor, excellent ventilation and full padding. Perfect for the re-enactment field.

  • Crusader Great Helm - 16 gauge - Brass

The Great Helm, which began to be seen on the battlefield as early as the 13th century on its earliest forms proved to be a winning design to be used almost for the next three centuries. It was most commonly worn over a chainmail coif or skull cap. It was usually built with 4 riveted pieces with flat top. It has a fierce-looking fixed visor that enhanced the already intimidating look of a charging knight. Our Crusader Great Helm was inspired by an original piece dated from the middle 13th century found in Pomerania that is now on display in the Historisches Museum of Berlin. This style of helmet was usually seen in the middle 13th century until the beginning of 14th century and can be seen in documents such as the Codex Manesse, the Maziejowsky Bible or the Cantigas.

  • Medieval Transitional Helm

Our kalota with face guard is a handsome example of the continuous development and improvement of helmets in the Middle Ages. This kalota replica (type of early great helm) with a menacing face guard provides much more protection than a simple bowl with a Spartan nose guard. It gets its strength from its material: 18 gauge steel. You can adjust the leather liner to fit your head perfectly, and you fasten it securely under your chin using a leather strap and buckle. The kalota helmet: protection and wearing comfort in one.

  • Horse Lords Helmet

Our Horse Lords helmet is based on the helmets mounted nomadic archers wore on the Eurasian steppes in ancient and medieval times - but bears a striking resemblance to those worn by the Riders or Rohan in The Lord of the Rings. The bowl of the helmet is made of coated steel and the nose guard is made of antiqued brass. Our Horse Lords' Helmet has a protective aventail at the back, and the decorative crest is made of genuine horsehair. Regardless of what the horse is doing, this helmet will stay on every mounted archer's head! Made from 18 gauge carbon steel.
