This German bastard sword (another name for hand and a half sword) is a perfect example of the fact that every rule – or category – has its exceptions. The original sword is in the famous Wallace Collection and is available for viewing (online as well) under the catalog number A477. It has very distinctive – and therefore, very interesting – proportions. From the pear-shaped pommel and the 2-part wooden grip with a ridge and leather wrapping to the heavy crossguard with two symmetrical side guard rings, the hilt says "classic bastard sword." However, the blade has the dimensions of a one handed sword. It is relatively wide, has a lenticular cross section with a very shallow fuller and is more like a cutting blade of the High Middle Ages.
New research on the original has provided an explanation. Originally dated to 1510 and assumed to have been forged in Germany, the sword actually has a blade from the 14th century and a "new," circa 1580 hilt. Our hand forged German bastard sword is made of carbon steel and the crossguard and pommel have been blackened. This sword includes a black leather scabbard with a mount and chape.
