This hand-crafted Scottish Targe is a well-made ½ scale replica inspired by an original that was captured at the Battle of Culloden and now resides in the Royal Armouries Collection at the Tower of London. It is constructed from wood with a premium quality tooled leather face with suede back and brass studs.

The leather covering may contain some natural inconsistencies, this does not affect the overall appearance or functionality of the product.

Castle Grant is the ancestral seat of the chiefs of Clan Grant. The Grant family held lands in Strathspey from the late 13th or early 14th century as supporters of the Bruce against the Comyns, and by 1435 held the lands of Freuchies upon which Castle Grant stands. The targe is based on an original 17th century targe that came from Castle Grant. The wooden shield is covered in tooled leather with traditional Celtic designs, brass studs, and mounts.

The iconic Basket Hilt Sword was wielded by Jacobite warriors during the rebellions of 1715 and 1745. It was usually partnered with the Scottish targe shield and was used to devastating effect during the Highland Charge! After the rebellion had been suppressed, the wearing of Scottish Basket Hilt swords, synonymous with Highland dress, was outlawed. However, the sword was adopted by officers of the Highland regiments in the 19th century. Our Jacobite Basket Hilt Sword features a brass basket with red cloth lining. The hand forged high carbon steel blade has a blunt edge and is housed in a leather covered wood scabbard.

This style of shield first appeared in the medieval period. It evolved from the larger kite shield – which gradually became smaller as head and leg protection became better. It is commonly referred to as a “Heater” shield because of its resemblance to the shape of an old flat iron.

This half sized shield is great for kids or as a display piece when you don’t have the room for the full sized version. It is hand painted and lacquered and features leather straps on the back. Shields may vary slightly due to the hand painted nature of this item.
