Hutton Duelling Sabre

£89.10

One of the rapidly growing arts within historical fencing societies is that of sabre fencing in the late 19th-century Italian style, originating with fencing masters who were employed to train mounted troops in the effective use of the military sabre. The Milanese fencing master Guiseppe Radaelli is credited with developing this style, while Salvatore Pecoraro introduced refinements which resulted in the technique finally adopted at the Military Masters School in Rome. The hilt designs have been replicated in these training sabres, with stainless steel guards and wire-wrapped sharkskin-pattern grips. The high-carbon flex-tempered steel blades by Windlass Steecrafts closely follow the proportions of the period and have blunt edges and rounded tip for safety. Includes matching, full metal scabbard.

*The above is the manufacturer's description. We think that the "rounded tip" featured on this blade is far too pointy for safe sparring/thrusting. If you intend to spar with this sword, it is imperative that the tip should be rounded off more and tipped with a rubber or metal cap.

Pretty and well-balanced, but not sparring-safe.Review by Tobias

At first glance, this seemed like an absolutely amazing saber. It looks absolutely gorgeous - even better in person than in the pictures - and handles extremely well. Everything seemed set for this to become my new favorite sword.

Unfortunately, there are three major drawbacks that prevent it from being used for sparring:
1. The tip is *not* rounded, unlike what the description claims. At all. It's *very* easy to accidentally draw blood with the point.
2. While the edge isn't exactly sharp, it's also not wide enough for me to trust it.
3. The metal is very soft and it chips excessively when parrying or deflecting.

Sadly, this means that it is not an appropriate sparring sword. But if it had a slightly wider edge, had a rounded point, and was less prone to chipping, it would be absolutely amazing. (Posted on 26/05/2019)
