Italian Mace

£61.05

In the course of the 15th century, knightly armor was developed to the point that normal swords were no longer a threat. The time of the Italian mace had come. These lightweight, small staffs with heavy heads were probably not considered chivalrous, but the knights themselves were probably responsible for starting this rumor. One or two hard blows on a steel plate harness, and even experienced knights suddenly had to stop fighting. A dent in the chest was often enough to shatter ribs and make it impossible to breathe – not to mention the effect of blows to the head.

The nine-sided steel shaft of this Italian mace has a grip wrapped with black leather and a head with eight ribs. The black finish heralds doom and protects against rust.

The Quintessential Mace Profile, at a Steal.Review by Lee

Maces are rather simple weapon compared to the intricate engineering solutions that go into swords and even axes. This usually lends to a generally cheaper price point and therefore a greater draw for those just entering the market and in want of maybe something a bit different. I decided to order a mace just so I had a bit of variety with my collection and you never know when you'll need to smash a watermelon open.

Windlass has a rather mixed reputation within the community for their swords but the same can't be said for the maces, well at least this one. Like most windlass products it sits firmly in the budget end of the spectrum, and while this does show with things like finishes and materials used the overall performance is solid.

In my opinion the Italian Mace is my go to image of what a flanged mace should look like, with eight distinct protrusions on the head and its all black appearance it definitely looks the part, albeit a bit simple. The hand is wrapped in what feels like a very cheap leather, which while unfortunate is to be expected at the price. It also came with rather a lot of grease on the metal parts which had to be wiped away.

The shaft is of hollow steel which helps to reduce its weight massively the whole mace feels reasonable in the hand. It is very top heavy as a mace should be and this is a stark contrast to most swords.

Overall this is a really cool piece, it's cheap, study and an excellent entry into some of the other non sword weapons of the time for those that don't want to break the bank. (Posted on 13/03/2018)
