The Close Helm first appeared in the 16th century and was still in use during the English Civil War in the 1640’s. Not long after this it was discarded in favour of lighter and cheaper helmets. It was popular both on the field of battle and in jousting tournaments. Some of the finest Close Helms to be crafted in England were made at King Henry VIII's Royal Almain Armoury in Greenwich.
Our European Close Helm is made in Italy. It is constructed from 20 gauge steel with a lacquered finish and features a separate visor and bevor, both of which are hinged and can be raised and lowered. Not recommended for contact re-enactment but perfect for display or theatrical use.
