Practical XL Katana - 28.5"

£193.20

Our Practical Katanas have always been at the forefront of providing economical yet functional swords to the martial arts community. Designed for maximum cutting power in heavy targets, these latest Practical XLs katanas combine the blade geometries and profiles of the Performance Series with the affordability of our Practical fittings. The blades in the cutting styles are forged from 1566 steel and differentially hardened in the traditional manner, producing an edge hardness of HRC60 and spine hardness of HRC40. The removable handle is tightly wrapped in the traditional style with imitation leather to provide a positive grip that will withstand years of tameshigiri practice.

Please note: Our range of katana, wakizashi and tantō are all made by hand and will feature the minor imperfections relating to this method of manufacture. This process ensures each piece is as unique as their historical counterparts. The main focus of the Practical Range is the blade. The fittings, although well made, do not have the same attention to detail found on more expensive lines. The Ito (handle wrap) may have a different number and proximity of diamonds to those shown in the picture.

Reviews

Great sword overall with some issuesReview by Piotrek

Overall: The specs from the website are pretty accurate to the sword’s actual measurements. It feels nice in the hand being on the heavy side. It’s very utilitarian so if you are looking for some eye candy this is not it. After some hands-on grinding, glueing and polishing I am happy with the purchase. Had the blade been sharp all the way and the tsuka without issues I would have given it 5 out of 5, but in the state of delivery it’s a solid 3.5.

Nagasa: You can tell it is semi-hand made with the angle-grinding waves on the blade still visible under correct lighting. For a blade in the practical line that’s fine and gives a little bit of character.

Kissaki: The sword came with blemishes around the tip, as if they went overboard with the etching. The brushing was not perfect either but good enough for a practical line sword.

Ha: The edge is very sharp between the tip and about 15 cm from the the tip. Beyond that it is dull enough not to pass the paper cut test. Disappointing.

Nakago: The tang’s surface is very rough making maintenance difficult underneath the habaki. It catches the polishing cloth.

Habaki: Good fit. Rough edges towards the seppa making cleaning difficult.

Fuchi: The fuchi was loose ever so slightly.

Tsuka: The handle has shims on both sides of the tang. It does not give a solid impression. This was unexpected.

Menuki: Not as shiny as in the pictures.

Tsuka-Ito: The ito is wrapped tightly but does not alternate, which is a little odd considering every Hanwei sword I have ever seen pictures of has alternating wrapping.

Same-hada: The same is plastic as advertised. On one side the plastic same consists of two pieces creating a seam, which is an eyesore.

Saya: The scabbard is good overall with no rattling and secure fit. It does however leave some rub marks on the blade. The smell of WD-40 was very noticeable and took a week or two to diminish.

Koiguchi: The koiguchi came with a gap between the horn and the wood.

Kurigata: The kurigata is made out of some fragile plastic material. A small piece fell off when I threaded the sageo through it.
