The traditional image of Richard the Lionheart, the second Plantagenet king of England, has come to us through the centuries, as a glorious crusader and knight. Richard was called Lionheart at the beginning of the Third Crusade when Philip of France was compared with a lamb and Richard with a lion. Richard was a generous knight and a wise politician but above all a great soldier. His own personal ability was a source of inspiration for his men in battle
Richard acquired a reputation as a leader and warrior becoming known as Richard ‘The Lion Heart’ or ‘Coeur de Lion’.
