Pirate Sabre
You might get the impression that the pirate's favorite edged weapon evolved from our naval saber, but that isn't entirely correct. This type of sabre was probably developed by the British Navy, which was looking for a weapon as optimal for close combat as it was for countering attempts to board ship. The thick, single-edged blade of a slightly curved naval sabre could easily slice through the ropes attached to a grappling hook and turn around to pierce an enemy at close quarters. The naval sabre's use was straightforward and easy to learn. Naval sabres caught on and were soon used on ships throughout the world – including ships that flew the black flag.

US Navy Cutlass M1860
Starting in 1860, US Navy M1860 cutlasses were manufactured for the US Navy in Chicopee, MA. They continued to be used after the Civil War broke out. Our replica has the marks you would expect to see on an original: "USN DR 1862" and "AMESMFGCO CHICOPEE MASS" to show that the cutlass is military issue and who manufactured it. Heavily influenced by the sabre used by the French navy, our US Navy Cutlass M1860 is a replica of the model that replaced the M1841. The slightly curved blade has a wide fuller that ends in the area of the point where the broad backstops and the false edge begins. The blade geometry of the M1860 makes it extraordinarily light. Held in place by a riveted pommel and the full knuckle bow at the hand guard, the wooden grip of this naval cutlass is covered in leather and wrapped with twisted, golden wire. It includes a leather scabbard with a frog for holding the scabbard.
