Dutch East India Cutlass
The Dutch East India Company was not only the first multinational corporation, it was also the world's largest trading company in the 17th and 18th centuries. In its heyday, it owned around 4,700 ships with a crew totaling almost one billion men. They had to defend their ships as well as their offices in Indonesia and Jakarta, and a cutlass was the best weapon for the job. For man-to-man battles, its length is perfect for the tight space of a ship. And the single-edged blade with two fullers is extraordinarily strong so it can cut ropes as well as hack through underbrush on land. The slightly curved, elegant wooden grip combines with an gracefully sweeping knuckle bow and shell-shaped basket to create a beautiful hilt worthy of the mighty VOC. Our Dutch East India Co. cutlass comes with a leather scabbard.

Scottish Pirate Cutlass
Pirates greatly appreciated the cutlass for its effectiveness in close combat. Because of its relatively compact dimensions, a cutlass could do quite a bit of damage in the close quarters of a ship's hold, while a strong cut with its broad blade could even sever the mighty ropes of a ship. Sometimes the classic cutlass was made with an openwork hilt for ventilation plus hand protection, but the single-edged, wide, curved blade with a distinctive yelman is characteristic of all cutlasses. The grip is wrapped with leather and the rounded pommel is riveted. The accompanying scabbard has a mount and chape made of steel. Circa 1690.
