  • Traditional Talwar - Pattern 2 - Blue Scabbard

DAMAGE: Small extracts of glue on the scabbard. The blade and sword are in perfect condition.

Perhaps the most recognisable weapon of the Indian Subcontinent, the iconic Talwar was a weapon to be feared in the hands of a highly skilled warrior. The short grip and disc pommel did not allow for much dexterity in the wrist which meant it was better suited for powerful slashing blows, There are many accounts from British Officers of the 19th century about how effective and respected this sword was when used on the battlefield.

The intricate hilt is decorated using the laborious “Koftgari” technique. This is a traditional process used by Indian smiths where a design is chiselled and etched into the metal, with silver wire carefully hammered into the etched design. It is then heated in a kiln so that the wire is permanently annealed into the hilt. The Damascus steel blade is made using traditional techniques. It is formed by forging 2 separate billets of steel into a single blade.  This leaves a unique rippled pattern to the blade surface. Traditionally this technique was used to combine iron and steel to create a durable blade with excellent edge retention.

The scabbard is made from wood which is overlaid with velvet. The steel fittings are also decorated using the same koftgari technique as used on the hilt. The sword also comes complete with a wooden display box with glass front. It features brass fittings and carrying handle. The interior is cushioned with a firm foam with a velvet overlay. Each of the Talwars in our collection is unique with no two being exactly the same. They are highly prized collector’s pieces and often steal the limelight as being the perfect gift at Indian weddings.
