  • Medieval Archer’s Axe

Axes have always been used as tools and are potentially deadly weapons as well. Depending on its size, an axe could either be designed to deliver mighty cuts to foes or as a medium-range throwing weapon.

They were also the second weapon of choice for archers. They used axes like our archer axe as hammers for pounding stakes into the ground and then sharpening their points as protection from the enemy. This kept the enemy a respectable distance away from a group of archers. When they could no longer keep the enemy at bay with arrows, archers used their axes as weapons. A tapering slot with a rounded head has been milled into the blade of our archer axe – for pulling nails out of wood. The handle of this axe is made of hardwood and the head is made of tempered steel.

    Overall Length: 51cm
    Blade Length: 12cm x 9.8cm
    Weight: 680g

  • Medieval Horseman’s Axe

In earlier ages the axes taken to a battle were the same ones used in everyday work. That, however, is not the case with this axe; it was made for war. The down curved, wedge-shaped blade coupled with the curved shaft made for a very powerful cutting arc that could shear through mail and badly damage the simple plate that was in use at the time. When reversed, all of the force of the blow was concentrated on the back hammer poll and could crush a helmet. In the hands of a mounted knight this type of heavy-headed axe was devastating to men on the ground and on horseback alike. It could split mail helms and shields, and the extended back poll could easily crush bone. The curve of the hardwood shaft added to the power of the blow. An excellent fighting axe and a devastating “high-tech” weapon for its age.

    Blade length: 15.8 cm
    Blade edge: 8.2 cm
    Weight: 795 g

  • Crusader Axe

The axe is one of man's oldest implements. Axes of stone, bronze, iron and finally steel were used as both a tool and a weapon. During the Crusades particularly, the axe was a favourite weapon. Richard the Lionheart favoured it, as did many men-at-arms, knights and peasants. Except for the large Danish axe, the full-fledged battle axe had yet to appear. Most axes were used both to hew the limbs of trees as well as the limbs of men. This axe is replicated from a photo of an old axe that was dated to about 1150, but no information was given as to source or location. Blade is tempered high carbon steel with hardwood shaft.

  • Robert the Bruce Axe

    1 Review(s)

Our Robert the Bruce Axe is a replica of the one that is held by his statue at the Bannockburn Battlefield site. This was the axe that was used to slay the English Knight Humphery de Bohun before the battle, the blow being so hard that it split his helmet and head in 2! The King’s only regret was that he had broken the shaft of his favourite axe! It features a long stained hardwood shaft and hand forged axe head. The head of this axe is blunt and it is designed for display only.
