Roman Scutum Shield - 106cm x 58cm

£104.17

The Roman Scutum (meaning shield) formed part of the standard equipment issued to the Roman Legionary. By the time of the invasion of Britain by Emperor Claudius in AD 43, this style of scutum (there have been other earlier designs) was becoming more widespread but was not yet the standard pattern. The Roman Scutum provided excellent protection against missile attacks, especially when used in the testudo (Latin for tortoise) formation. Although no complete Scuta have ever been found in the UK (wood decomposes easily), the metal fittings from some shields have survived - there are some particularly nice examples in the British Museum.

Our Roman Scutum Shield is a high-quality replica and is constructed from linen covered wood and hand painted like the originals. It features a brass boss in the centre and reinforcing strips around the edges. This Roman shield is a favourite amongst reenactors and is suitable for living history.

Great for ReenactmentReview by Markus

Sturdy, very big and great colors. Perfect for Reenactment. My only gripe is, that the boss in the middle had two pins, that stuck out towards the holder (me).
Not really dangerous and I would still recommend buying it for Reenactment, however some minor touchups on the backside might be necessary for heavy usage.
Overall? Great product - looks very cool as well. Love it. (Posted on 16/11/2018)

The shield is a must have for re-enactment. Built to be sturdy. The size, weight and balance makes it easy to use. The brass boss is a really nice touch and pretty effective. It's really nicely decorated and the paint job is pretty durable after a couple of test sparring. Only con is the handle is a little cramped, which makes it uncomfortable if your hands are big. This is probably just a variable in production, nothing easier then a little trim and it'll be good to go.
Overall, Very good product. (Posted on 09/07/2016)
