The shield has two crossed hand grips made of leather at the back and a long leather arm strap that you hold under tension to keep the shield close to your body. If you need to drop the shield quickly, simply let go of the leather strap (as described in the "Manesse Codex.") Another long strap allows you to carry the shield on your back, and it has a padded arm rest for extra protection against hard blows.

Pirate Captain's Hanger
On board ship, weapons were usually kept under lock and key. Mutinying crew members could have turned angry words into bloody deeds too easily if they were carrying weapons. But the captain had a special role and was of course allowed to have his saber or hanger at his side at all times.
Learn More
Our officer hanger has a modestly curved blade with a narrow fuller that extends over three-quarters of the length of the blade. This saber has a one handed grip wrapped in leather. The hand guard includes a crossguard that extends toward the pommel. The ball-shaped pommel is decorative, but it also contributes to the balance of our officer hanger, which comes with a scabbard.

Scottish Pirate Cutlass
Pirates greatly appreciated the cutlass for its effectiveness in close combat. Because of its relatively compact dimensions, a cutlass could do quite a bit of damage in the close quarters of a ship's hold, while a strong cut with its broad blade could even sever the mighty ropes of a ship.
Learn More
Sometimes the classic cutlass was made with an openwork hilt for ventilation plus hand protection, but the single-edged, wide, curved blade with a distinctive yelman is characteristic of all cutlasses. The grip is wrapped with leather and the rounded pommel is riveted. The accompanying scabbard has a mount and chape made of steel. Circa 1690.

Ulfberht Viking Sword
An old legend has it that a Nordic smith named Ulfberht developed the first all steel blade. This crucial development achieved near-mythical status among warriors, making this one of the most important swords in the study of medieval weapons. Several of these blades from slightly different time periods exist, some engraved in gratitude and reverence with Ulfberht’s hallowed name.

The etchings on both sides of our blade are copied exactly so that our reproduction is identical, warts and all. Made of high carbon steel (actually better than the original) it is beautifully balanced. The grip is wood wrapped with leather. The stout crossguard is steel and the pommel is of the Brazil nut shape that was quite popular at the time, both with Vikings and the rest of Europe. A beautiful and important sword. Roman Pugio Dagger - 2nd Century
The distinct shape of the Roman Pugio dagger blade was excellent for close quarters fighting, and was used throughout the legions. Although swords and knives were generally not worn by Roman civilians within the boundaries of the "Pax Romana", barbarians and bandits were certainly to be found in the outlands, and a merchant or trader best go armed. No doubt many an old legionnaire must have found it easier to keep his balance with the familiar weight on his hip as he worked his farm in new won territory.
