Browse our Short Sleeve Chainmail Shirt Haubergeon range

The short sleeve chainmail shirt is also known as a Haubergeon which literally translates as “Little Hauberk”. The Haubergeons were smaller and lighter than the full / long sleeve chainmail shirts (hauberks) and therefore easier and cheaper to manufacture. They would usually be waist length and would terminate at the elbow or shoulder. Hauberks are long sleeved chainmail shirts that often terminate at the knee, and have a split up the front and back to allow for riding horses. The name Hauberk comes from the Old Frankish word “halsberg” which originally described a small piece of mail that protected (“Bergen – to protect) the throat and neck (the “Hals”). Hauberks were expensive to manufacture, both in materials and in the labour time and skill required to make them. As such they were usually only worn by nobles and professional soldiers. The Bayeux Tapestry features Norman Knights wearing knee length hauberks with three quarter length sleeves. Their Saxon adversaries wore shirts of a similar design. Hauberks were in use in Europe until the 15th century when the advent of plate armour and better firearms led to its decline.

  • Roman Lorica Hamata - XL

The Roman Lorica Hamata is directly inspired by Celtic design as the Celts are the people that have been credited for the invention of chainmail. The Lorica Hamata that we decided to reconstruct here still keeps a lot of its Celtic original traits making it perfectly suitable equipment for Roman or Celtic cavalrymen or even legionary of Caesar during the Gallic wars or any similar legionary fighting of Hannibal’s armies during the Punic Wars.

Meticulously handmade from sturdy 17-gauge MILD STEEL FLAT RINGS (diameter of approx. 9 mm), with alternating flat rings, intricately interlocked in a FOUR-IN-ONE pattern, this chainmail armour buffers against striking attacks. Genuine Leather belts and PURE BRASS adornments make it even more accurate to its original structure.

  • Half Haubergeon Joined Voiders - Large

Our half haubergeon/voiders are used by knights and men at arms who want to cover the weak spots of their plate armour. It was especially prevalent in Quattrocento in Italy for men at arm wanting to wear proper sleeves protection, without burdening themselves with the weight of a full chainmail shirt. We find such configuration in several artistic representations of that time period.

This half haubergeon is intricately HANDMADE from 17 gauge mild steel rings with a diameter of approx. 9 mm each, riveted using DOME RIVETS. For increased strength, the rings alternate with SOLID FLAT RINGS. This half haubergeon is available in three sizes: medium, large and extra-large.
