Description

Details

Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great was King of the Franks and Emperor of the Romans until his death in 814. He united much of Europe during the early Middle Ages and formed a Frankish state known as the Carolingian Empire. Charlemagne’s Paladins, also called the Twelve Peers, were the foremost warriors in his court. They are first heard of in the early chansons de geste such as The Song of Roland, where they represent Christian valour against the Saracen hordes inside Europe. Upon his death, Charlemagne was laid to rest in his imperial capital of Aachen in what is today Germany.
