The Great Helm, which began to be seen on the battlefield as early as the 13th century on its earliest forms proved to be a winning design to be used almost for the next three centuries. It was most commonly worn over a chainmail coif or skull cap. It was usually built with 4 riveted pieces with flat top. It has a fierce-looking fixed visor that enhanced the already intimidating look of a charging knight. Our Crusader Great Helm was inspired by an original piece dated from the middle 13th century found in Pomerania that is now on display in the Historisches Museum of Berlin. This style of helmet was usually seen in the middle 13th century until the beginning of 14th century and can be seen in documents such as the Codex Manesse, the Maziejowsky Bible or the Cantigas.
Our Crusader Great Helm is constructed from 16 gauge steel making it perfect for re-enactment. It features a padded liner and adjustable leather chin strap.
Steel thickness may vary due to the handcrafted methods used on its manufacturing.

This helmet is amazing. It's heavy, it's thick, it will protect you from a blow and it looks gorgeous.
My only complaint is that the front plates are actually just one plate and welding marks can be seen on the side which is not very historically accurate.
Now, I am no blacksmith and have no expertise in metal working, but would it have been that much trouble to just have two separate plates riveted instead of welded together?
I don't know, just saying. For the price I paid, I think it's a fair thing to ask.
Other than that, the padding inside looks alright, but can easily be torn out, since it's just linen with some kind of styrofoam filling glued to the inside. Which I did tear out, since my fat melon head wouldn't fit whilst wearing an arming cap and coif inside the helmet, so whatever, not bothered about it, personally.
The breath holes in the picture looked a tiny bit asymmetrical, which would have been good because that gives it a look of authenticity, made by a blacksmith from ages long gone, but in the real product, wow my lord, the holes are all perfectly parallel and lined up like god must have guided the blacksmith's hand or something, incredible stuff.
Anyway, again, not too bothered about that, it's a veeeeeery minor detail.
Everything else about it is top notch, I am not very good at talking about positives, but the brass cross is very nicely riveted, I guess, the eye sockets are wide and allow for really good vision, especially compared to that cheap "Crusader Helmet" variant that cost me 60 quid, the vision on that one was terrible.
This helmet is high quality and you can feel it when you hold it and then place it on your head.
Head movement is very good, at least with arming cap and chain coif. The helmet stays in one place, it doesn't swivel around, doesn't rotate itself, no. It stays in the exact way that you positioned it on your head. I don't know what kind of magic that is, but I do love it.
In conclusion: Very good. (Posted on 29/11/2024)
