Fenrir Viking Shield

£73.33

Our painted Viking shield features Fenrir, also called Fenrisúlfr, a monstrous wolf of Norse mythology. He was the son of the demonic god Loki and a giantess, Angerboda. Fearing Fenrir’s strength and knowing that only evil could be expected of him, the gods bound him with a magical chain made of the sound of a cat’s footsteps, the beard of a woman, the breath of fish and other occult elements.

The shield is constructed from thick wood and features a wooden handle and steel boss. It is edged with rawhide to protect from sword and axe cuts. This shield is a little on the light side for full contact re-enactment but is perfect for theatre and film work and great as a display piece.

Diameter: 60cm

A good shield for displayReview by Ian

Though not exactly traditionally constructed the shield does retain period specific elements such as rivets instead of screws or bolts, rawhide edging etc and certainly is pleasing to the eye. At just 60cm its a little on the small side for battle and with no rawhide or leather covering to the woods I think it would split after a while, its reasonably light weight and easy to move around. It’s going to make a lovely centre piece on my chimney breast when I figure out how on earth to wall mount it. (Posted on 29/08/2023)
