Description

Details

Leg protection was extremely important armour for cavalry. It was one of the earliest forms of protection seen among these kinds of troops and became more and more important with the increase of cavalry warfare.

This item is typical of the beauty and intricacy of work in German style armour. This version is based on original armour from south Germany that can be found exhibited in a collection in Berlin. The piece reflects the Belgian and Austrian influence on the German armour of this period.

The lateral hinge system can also be found in Valdemar VI´s armour currently displayed in the Royal Armouries or in the archduke, and later emperor, Maximilian I´s armour.

They are constructed from 18 gauge steel and whilst not ideal for re-enactment (16 gauge is usually the minimum) they are great for theatrical and LARP use. Features adjustable buckled leather straps for a secure fit.

Steel thickness may vary due to the handcrafted methods used in its manufacturing. This item has a satin finish so its surface will be slightly reflective as many original armour models.

Short review: as good as the pics show, if you're 5'9 and average build, you can likely get these to work.

Long review:
I took the plunge ordering these. They're beautifully designed and surprisingly well fitting, personally for me only requiring minor alteration. The armours arrived well oiled/treated and packaged a bag with bubble wrap (delivered in cardboard box). Despite the box being slightly damaged and leaking a sticky (probably the oil) substance, everything was intact and no clear damage.

I'm a 5'8 male, average build, about 13st and legs that I would describe as average/chunky and defined. (I know guys with skinny legs, and I'm not that guy.)

Firstly, I have to thank good genes as whatever template this manufacturer used as their average male body, seems to only be a few inches taller than me. They fit perfectly around my thigh and knee, with straps long enough to reach around and holes decently punched.

The greave and foot segment caused the largest issue for me, and I reckon due to height. Even with the pin for the greave at the highest point, the top rim of the foot part was digging into my foot slightly, and the ankle side parts touched the floor. By pulling up on the leather strap, as if it were attached properly to a harness/jacket, this was alleviated and the pressure off my foot. However, I still suspect these were too long, to be paired with sensible footwear. Fortunately I have a friend fairly handy with metalwork and I plan to cut down the metal sides of the greaves or roll the edges to help shorten the length.

As a whole, the legs fit very well. The set is very heavy, to carry both pieces with greaves is a test for my weedy little arms, but wearing them feels quite a lot lighter. Once properly strapped in place, and lightly lifting the upmost leather tab, they were quite comfortable.

A downside of this particular set is that the greaves have no back plating, and I understand as this is probably very bespoke and requires specific tailoring. I would assume however, if you can make your own steel greave backing, and weld on a little brass hinge or two, them the attached belt will hold that all in place.

It's by no means a nobleman's bespoke armour kit, but that's very reasonable for an off-the-shelf item. I originally did measure my legs several times before purchasing this, and checked other websites and contacted theknightshop for additional info, and from that I did conclude that they may be too tight on my thigh, and too long on my leg, however I'm happy to say that the metal seems light and flexible enough with good force, that these things can be ironed out.

I can't wait to do a big shop wearing these. (Posted on 10/12/2020)

I ordered these with high expectations due to the price - i can confirm they look beautiful and feel great to wear, not too heavy either and the articulation is very flowing and free.

I noticed 3 down sides however these are easily fixable...

1) some straps arent long enough, depends on your leg size ofcourse but i have fairly average legs and some straps wouldnt go round.
2) the greaves proved rather difficult to put in place, when trying to fit them onto the bolt below the knee the greave kept popping out. Had to bend the metal a little to fit the shape.
3) wear well padded boots! The bottom of the greaves will dig into the top of your feet. (Posted on 02/10/2018)
