The most important item in a Greek Hoplite’s kit was his shield (aspis). As such it is often referred to as a Hoplon – closely associated with the word Hoplite. The Hoplite’s shield was capable of turning a spear or sword thrust but was not proof against arrows or javelins. The shields were fairly heavy and were often supported on the knees before combat took place. Insubordinate Hoplites were made to do guard duty with their shields on their arms as a form of punishment!
Our Greek Hoplite Shields features all steel construction with brass trim and decoration. The shield is covered both front and back with brown suede and has a decorated steel boss at the centre. The reverse of the shield features a steel arm-hole (porax) and cord loops for suspension across the back or shoulders.
