Viking Axes

Battle Axes were one of the most fearsome weapons used by the Viking and Anglo-Saxons alike. The shape of the axe head differed according to its purpose. Broad headed 2 handed axes that appeared towards the end of the period were specialised weapons that were almost a distinguishing mark of the Anglo-Danish Huscarls at the Battle of Hastings. Beaded Axes are sometimes identified as being specifically Nordic in origin. We offer a great rage of Viking Axes. From the broad bladed battle axes to the francisca style throwing axes we are sure to have an axe that suits your needs. We even stock axe heads with 3mm edges that are suitable for re-enactment.

  • Viking Dragon Axe

The battle axes of the High Middle Ages that were preferred by the Vikings are probably advanced developments of Frankish throwing axes. Their blades have straight upper edges, while the sharp edges were usually curved toward the handle. Their handles were too long to throw; instead, they were used in close combat with shields.

This Viking battle axe has a blade of hand forged carbon steel which is fastened to a hardwood handle. Both sides of the blade are etched with a decorative Celtic knot pattern that features a dragon's head.

    Sharp edge: 12.2 cm
    Weight: 850g

  • Medieval Archer’s Axe

    1 Review(s)

Axes have always been used as tools and are potentially deadly weapons as well. Depending on its size, an axe could either be designed to deliver mighty cuts to foes or as a medium-range throwing weapon.

They were also the second weapon of choice for archers. They used axes like our archer axe as hammers for pounding stakes into the ground and then sharpening their points as protection from the enemy. This kept the enemy a respectable distance away from a group of archers. When they could no longer keep the enemy at bay with arrows, archers used their axes as weapons. A tapering slot with a rounded head has been milled into the blade of our archer axe – for pulling nails out of wood. The handle of this axe is made of hardwood and the head is made of tempered steel.

    Overall Length: 51cm
    Blade Length: 12cm x 9.8cm
    Weight: 680g

All dimensions are approximate and may vary from piece to piece.
