Maldon Viking Sword

£252.50

The Maldon Viking sword from Windlass Steelcrafts Battlecry collection is a light, agile and resilient fighting blade that captures nearly everything that made this style such a formidable and near legendary design. Created to deal with shields, mail and thick fur or leather armour, it was more than a match for any hand-weapon of its day.

Its semi-rounded point was capable of forcefully biting into targets without snagging or catching while its well-honed edge, neither too wide nor too narrow, enabled the widest possible array of single-hand combination blows. Its snub-hilt with distinct lobed-pommel gave the wielder a snug grip facilitating a quick center-of-rotation easily manipulated for exceptionally versatile action. With its capacity for delivering rapid single-handed strikes, it was ideal for fighting armed with a shield but also highly effective when matched with a sax or even a hand-axe.

This a sword well-suited to any hand. Given a unique shadowed hue, one can well imagine a blade like the Maldon purposely darkened for a Northern nighttime skirmish. Serving a pivotal part in Norse martial heritage, it's easy to see why this style was so feared and so influential. Includes a matching scabbard with belt stop, custom packaging and certificate of authenticity signed by each smith that touched your blade through every step of the forging process.

The Battlecry line of historical swords, daggers and axes have been designed in conjunction with John Clements, whose knowledge of historical fencing and Medieval and Renaissance fighting methods is unsurpassed. Hand forged by Windlass Steelcrafts, the 1065 high carbon steel is tempered in computer controlled ovens to an RC in the low 50's. This ensures strength, resiliency and edge retention. Swords have extra wide full tangs and all weapons are sharpened.

Each model has been put through rigorous physical testing to exceed industry standards. These battle tested weapons have a stone washed, blackened finish. Each is individually inspected at every step of the manufacturing process, and only after passing inspection they receive the armourers' stamp on the blade. A certificate is included with each, signed by the craftsman that worked on your blade. Also included is a matching sheath and, when applicable, frog.

Good but can be betterReview by Ian

I bought this sword as the Damascus Godfrey was unavailable and make no mistake it’s a lovely sword and comes razor sharp so watch your fingers. The blade itself is well made and treated with copious amounts of antique wax to keep it rust free. It has just the right amount of flex and feels good in the hand. The balance point is a little further forward than I would prefer but you can’t have everything in an off the shelf sword. My only real gripe is the construction of the guard, with it just being a cut rectangular hole instead of shaped to fit the blade during forging and the scabbard which is just plain leather with metal ends.
There are a few video’s on modifying this sword on YouTube, things such as removing the black finish on the blade, creating a more historically accurate hand grip but the one I’m looking at exploring is fitting twisted wire to the pommel, which I think would have been there in the 800’s. All in all I love my sword and will not be parted from it. (Posted on 29/08/2023)

Took delivery of my sword today and I couldn't be happier with it, it surpasses it's description and sits well with my hand forged Viking axe collection.

Already eyeing up the Leonidas sword. (Posted on 01/12/2017)

Bought this Windlass Viking sword a few days ago.
Received it in no time. Delivery was very very fast. As fast as a viking raid.
Only the monks on Lindisfarne received it faster.

I'm very impressed by both the quality and the looks of this Maldon Viking Sword.
No wonder Windlass produced the official Gurkha knive. They make good quality knives and swords.
So the Maldon Viking sword is worth every cent!

Make sure you get one.
This sword will not disappoint you on your trip to Valhalla.
