Mary Read lived as a man most of her life. She and Anne Bonny were pirates under Captain Jack Rackham, also known as Calico Jack. Most of the crew were unaware that there were women aboard.
In the Baroque period of the late 17th century and early 18th century, most men – including outlaws and pirates – regularly wore dress coats. This form-fitting coat that developed from the earlier jerkin and is the forerunner of the tailcoat. Baroque dress coats are just the thing for adventurous ladies.
Our ladies Baroque dress coat is made of 100 percent wool with a hearty texture that contrasts with the smooth lining fabric. The wide rows of buttons on both sides of the front opening are not for closing the dress coat – they are there to keep the revers open. The revers are decorated with the same golden soutache and trim used to define and add shine to the generous collar. The extremely deep cuffs are decorated with five metal buttons for an elegant appearance.
