In the Europe of 17th century the Spanish empire was at the height of its importance. Being one of the world powers with crown domains that extended considerably. The Dutch, due to cultural and religious shock decided to rise up against their sovereign in what was known as the Eighty Years War or Dutch Revolt. To help this revolt Jacob de Gheyn II made engravings for the "Exercise of Weapons" which taught the use of pike, musket and arquebus.
Extracted directly from the engravings, we've interpreted and reproduced this beautiful cabasset. It is ideal for 17th century re-enactment from the English Civil War era. In the engravings, pikemen can be seen wearing this protection combined with a breastplate (MH-A0798).They can also be seen on arquebus troops and are represented in the art of other places and on other troops. The cheek plates included were used to protect the neck and face of the wearer and became a common feature of the age.
This helmet is constructed from 16 gauge steel making it great for English Civil War era re-enactment. Leather chin strap included.
