Raptor Katana - Nambokucho Zukuri

£405.83

The Nanbochuko period in Japanese history (the latter part of the 14th. century) encompassed sixty years of internal conflict in Japan, which spawned a demand for more and bigger sword blades than ever produced previously. Blades became longer and wider, sometimes to extremes (the Odachi had its genesis in this period). Named for this period, the Nanbokucho Katana is impressively sized. With a blade length of 30”, a long kissaki and a weight of just under 3 lbs. it is designed for heavy targets. It is, however, surprisingly agile and nimble enough to master double cuts.

Please note: Our range of katana, wakizashi and tantō are all made by hand and will feature the minor imperfections relating to this method of manufacture. This process ensures each piece is as unique as their historical counterparts.

Description

Details

Designed under the auspices of cutting master James Williams the Raptor series, has been created for the cutting practitioner who does not necessarily have access to mats but who wishes to practice and perfect his cutting technique.

The blades are forged in 5160 high-carbon steel and specially heat treated to produce very high resilience and greater tolerance of misdirected cuts than a conventional differentially tempered blade. This steel structure also avoids the need for excessive thickness, allowing the blades to replicate the weight and handling characteristics of Japanese originals. The edge geometry is configured to facilitate the cutting of both soft and semi-hard materials without chipping, allowing the cutter a wide choice of targets.

Each katana in the series features a unique blade style, each with its origins in Japanese swordmaking history, providing the cutting practitioner with choices in both aesthetics and handling characteristic.

Great first buy for me !Review by Neil

Iam no expert of swords and this is in fact my very first ever sword that is more of a ornament for a sword rack, but its not quite real Art unless its real is it... the sword is quite a beast at cutting, I did some cutting tests at work and it was clean and did the job very well, to well in fact i cut so clean through a box i tapped the floor when doing a overhead downward strike, lucky enough no damage to the blade at all. overall very happy with it! You cannot see the Tsuba (Guard) with the limited pictures here which does not do it justice as i was very surprised it has a very nice metal with a intricate Eagle drawn onto it, that also is the theme sitting under the guard and on the very bottom of the hilt at the pommel. The sword does feel a little weighty and certainly could not be used one handed however i think its a two handed sword from the feel and look of its design, it has a strong feel when u swing it that it has serious kick behind it, though this doesn't make it feel too unwieldy as u can easily do 2 quick strikes for sure with ease and move it around swiftly but doing it extensively can see one self slowing down, with practice iam sure it become more easier to wield for extensive strikes and motion or if you are quite tall and strong already it be no problem. now for the customer service, was 10/10 it came within about a week if i recall from when i ordered it and throughout the entire process was updated all the way with everything i wanted to know till it arrived and left not wondering about its status, very good delivery and service here. I highly recommend this sword for its aesthetics and its cutting ability, all round very pleased, only gripes i have is slight mark on the sword on habaki i think i will need to try polish out or something and the seppa (spacer at the guard) is slightly slack but not very noticeable but these i guess are expected since they are hand forged and slight mistakes can happen. Oh and one last thing is the Saya for me was not the one seen in the pictures here, but was the saya from the other Raptor Katana on this website, however it defiantly is 77cm *30inchs as stated and the saya was a great and has no rattle so was flawless fit!
