Belts like these were used in Ancient Greece to offer lightweight yet mobile protection to the upper thighs and were the inspiration for the Roman cingulum. The layers of natural leather are reinforced with decorative aluminium fittings. Typically these belts were worn beneath breastplates and this one is particularly suited to our Greek muscle armour sets. 

It is designed to fit over armour and fits waist sizes from 45 to 50”.

Tabards were worn over chainmail to protect the metal from the elements such as the blistering heat of the sun and rust inducing rain. They were also worn to display the wearer’s coat of arms or affiliations so that they could be easily identified on the battlefield and in tournaments.

Our Rampant Lion Tabard is hand crafted from 100% cotton and features a rampant lion embroidered on the front. In heraldry, the Lion traditionally symbolises courage, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness and valour, because historically it has been regarded as the "king of beasts".

The sides of the tabard are left open so that it can accommodate pretty much any size of wearer. It is usually worn with a belt which is not supplied – but there are plenty to choose from in our “Belts” category. Great for LARP or fancy dress!

One of the most outstanding finds at the Sutton Hoo Ship Burial was the Great Gold Buckle. The buckle was made of gold with densely interwoven and interpenetrating ribbon animals rendered in chip-carving on the front.

This stunning piece was expertly engineered by Anglo-Saxon craftsmen and was probably made for one of 4 kings: Raedwald who was overlord of the English kingdoms between AD616 and his death (at the latest in 627, probably in 625/626), Eorpwald (died 627/628) and co-regents Sigebert and Ecric, who both died fighting Penda of Mercia in AD637. The Great Gold Buckle is now on display in the British Museum.
