  • Sugar Loaf Helmet with Visor - 16 gauge

The Sugar Loaf helmet, so called because of its similarity in shape to the traditional "Sugar Loaves" that sugar was traditionally sold in, was a later variant of the Great Helm and was used throughout the 13th and 14th Centuries. This style of helmet saw use in many famous battles of the period and was also worn by Crusaders. The domed top was much better at deflecting blows than the flat topped Great Helms.

Our Sugar Loaf Helmet with Visor is hand crafted from 16 gauge steel with a polished finish and decorated with a brass cross. The hinged visor can be raised to allow for extra vision and ventilation at the cost of protection.

    Depth: 25cm
    Circumference: 66.5cm

  • German Paratrooper Helmet

The Fallschirmjäger was formed in 1935 and it became apparent that they would require different kit to that of the regular infantry. The existing M1935 "Stahlhelm" was adapted by removing the projecting visor and flared rim to become the M1938 "Fallschirmhelm". The modified shell incorporated a more substantial leather liner and chin strap than that of regular infantry helmet and afforded a greater level of protection that was required by airborne assault troops.

This replica is a faithful copy of an original and is constructed from 18 gauge steel with adjustable leather liner and chin strap.

  • Archer's Spangenhelm - 14 gauge

The Spangenhelm was a creation of the Scythians and Sarmatians from the Eurasian steppes. By the 16th century it had become the most common helmet design in Europe. The word Spangenhelm is of German origin and refers to the “spangen” which were the metal strips that formed the helmet’s construction.

Spangenhelms were popular as they were relatively easy and cheap to produce. They were eventually replaced by stronger, but more expensive nasal helms with 1 piece skulls. Some of the nasal helmets shown on the Bayeux Tapestry seem to be of Spangenhelm construction.

This style was made specifically for archers, the nasal being omitted to provide greater visibility. It is constructed from 14 gauge steel and is perfect for re-enactment. It features an adjustable leather spider-style liner and buckled chin strap.

    Inner Circumference: 59.5cm
    Weight: 2258g
