Chainmail Armour

Chainmail Armour

Our Butted and Riveted Chainmail (maille) range is some of the best value for sale in the UK and is great for those just starting out in re-enactment or LARP. It is also great for theatre and TV productions where an authentic look is required! We have a great selection of Butted and Riveted Coifs, Haubergeons and Hauberks for every budget to browse through.

Butted Chainmail can be produced more cheaply than Riveted Chainmail as there is less work involved in the manufacturing process. All of our Butted Chainmail products are manufactured from High Tensile Steel to increase durability and minimise maintenance – although it is not unusual to lose a few links through repeated use. If long term durability and minimum maintenance is a concern you should check out our range of Riveted Chainmail.

Our range of Riveted Chainmail (maille) is a much more durable alternative to our Butted Chainmail and we offer one of the most comprehensive ranges for sale in the UK. Each link is hand riveted using authentic techniques to produce strong and durable maille that wouldn’t look out of place on a medieval battlefield. Riveted Chainmail is more expensive due to the time consuming nature of manufacture but requires much less maintenance than butted maille products. If you are looking for an authentic high durability product that requires minimum maintenance, then Riveted Chainmail is for you.

  • Chainmail Coif - Butted

    1 Review(s)

Mail was thought to have been invented by the Celts. The earliest example was found in a Celtic Chieftain's burial in Romania. It was a popular form of defence for the warrior elite of the Viking and Early Medieval periods. It is often (wrongly) referred to as chainmail but this terminology was first introduced by Sir Walter Scott in 1822 in his novel "The Fortunes of Nigel". In the medieval period it was simply known as "Mail".

The coif was designed to protect the head, neck and shoulders against damage from bladed weapons. It was very effective at doing so - the Royal Armouries have conducted tests with well-made mail and concluded that "it is almost impossible to penetrate using any conventional medieval weapon". The Mail Coif is constructed by hand from hundreds of steel rings and will fit all but the largest of heads. The rings are uncoated mild steel to provide an authentic finish and covered in a light layer of oil to prevent rust.

This item is crafted using mild steel rings. If you require even greater durability please check our high tensile steel products or our Riveted Chainmail section.

  • Chainmail Standard - Butted

Mail was thought to have been invented by the Celts. The earliest example was found in a Celtic Chieftain's burial in Romania. It was a popular form of defence for the warrior elite of the Viking and Early Medieval periods. In the medieval period, it was simply known as "Mail".

Chainmail Standards surround and protect the upper chest and throat between the breastplate and helm. This mail Standard is crafted in high tensile steel, and though butted construction has less structural integrity than riveted mail this steel type will provide a sturdier mail garment than mild steel. The mail is attached to a leather collar and it is fastened with 2 buckled leather straps.
