Medieval Hand Armour

These short gauntlets are articulated, so each digit is covered with a series of metal plates connected to an hourglass style cuff. Made of 16 gauge steel, these historic style gauntlets feature a leather underlayer sewn to tips of the fingers and further secured in place with leather loops. A buckled leather strap fortifies the overall fit of the gauntlet and can be adjusted to specifically suit the wearer. Ideal for keeping movements quick and precise, the hourglass shape of the cuff allows for a wide variety of unhindered wrist movement.

Fingerless mittens or gauntlets like these are common to see in different representations along the golden age of armour between 1400 and 1500. This particular model is based on the ones that can be found at the excellent Milanese armour known among experts as ´Avant´Armour because of the inscription repeated on its skirt. Used by cavalry and infantry alike, artistic representations show that they were especially used by those who normally wielded polearms.

The use of mittens gauntlets became more frequent during the second quarter of the 15th C. and continued to be popular long afterwards.  They were mainly used by infantry who wanted to protect their hands when using pikes and halberds.
