Transitional Helms

We offer a great selection of Transitional Helms from the early medieval period. These helmets were worn by Crusader knights such as the Templars and Hospitallers. They are constructed in a range of different thicknesses of steel. Our 14 and 16 gauge helmets are great for re-enactment. Our 18 gauge helmets are better suited for more theatrical purposes, LARP or as great collector’s display pieces.

  • 12th/13th Century Norman Knight Spangenhelm

This Norman Spangenhelm is HANDMADE from 16 gauge MILD STEEL and comes with a reinforced faceplate, just like its historical counterpart. Its total height is 32 cm with a (15×21) cm faceplate. The maximum length from the faceplate to the end is 27 cm. The width of the conical top is 20.5 cm. The eye slits measure about (6×2.5) cm. Weighs about 2 Kg and 430 grams. The leather liner is comfortable, shock-absorbent, and ensures proper eye alignment for the eye slit. Its 68 cm circumference (without liner) makes it fit almost all head sizes (65 cm with liner). Note: This product is carefully coated with a layer of oil when packaged that acts as a temporary (protective) layer against corrosion (rust), which can easily be wiped off using any oil remover or even a dry cloth.

Well-designed and meticulously crafted for a true Norman knight or a fearless crusader, this Spangenhelm, with its sturdy face plate, would perfectly complete your 12th-13th century re-enactment outfits. The couched lance technique required better face protection as the old nasal helmet didn’t prevent fatal hits above the shield. A face plate was added for extra protection, which worked well against attackers from the front, including archers and horse riders.
