Roman Cooking Grid Iron

This Roman gridiron would have been placed over a fire to provide a surface for cooking pans and pots. Evidence suggests that Romans introduced this technology to Britain. Examples of this form have been found in some numbers in the kitchens of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and are known in Britain from Newstead.

This particular example is modeled after the gridiron exhibited in The British Museum.
