This Spangenhelm cabasset with reinforced straps is inspired by those used by the Scandinavian people, specifically by the well-known Vikings. It stands out for its stylized design in the form of eyebrows or inverted Drakkar, which gives it a great showiness while protecting the forehead.

Many Vikings considered their helmet as much a status symbol as a means of protection. Our embossed Viking helmet is a very impressive model. Our Viking War Chief helmet is based on the “Gjermundbu Helmet”, the only Viking era helmet ever found in Scandinavia. To make this helmet stand out from those worn by lesser warriors, it is heavily adorned with etched knotwork patterns in the Norse style.

It is constructed from 18 gauge steel with crossed reinforcing straps (spangs) and features an antiqued finish. Includes adjustable leather liner and chinstrap.

The Spangenhelm was a creation of the Scythians and Sarmatians from the Eurasian steppes. By the 6th century it had become the most common helmet design in Europe. The word Spangenhelm is of German origin and refers to the “spangen” which were the metal strips that formed the helmet’s construction.

Spangenhelms were popular as they were relatively easy and cheap to produce. They were eventually replaced by stronger, but more expensive nasal helms with 1 piece skulls. Some of the nasal helmets shown on the Bayeux Tapestry seem to be of Spangenhelm construction.
