  • Royal Armouries Henry VIII Sabre Letter Opener

Drawing upon the outstanding quality and range of the Royal Armouries collections, we are proud to present this range of fine quality replicas. At each stage of the process, from the initial selection to the last details of the prototypes, the Museum’s experts on armour and edged weapons have been personally involved.

These replicas are impressive in both their look and feel, accurately capturing the dimensions, materials and processes of the originals with tremendous attention to detail. The Royal Armouries is delighted that enthusiasts will now be able to enjoy these objects ‘at first hand’.

Based on the original Henry VIIl Sabre (IX.634), which is part of the museum's collection, and dates to 1500AD, this miniature replica is produced from stainless steel and features a slightly curved grip and a 'beaked' pommel. The cross-guard exhibits a serpentine design which leads to a, 24cm long, curved blade (which is blunt for safety). The fuller of the blade is shallow and runs two-thirds of its length.

Weapons such as the original Sabre are illustrated in Flemish or South German manuscripts and the engraving on this particular blade has been compared to that visible on the armour of King Henry VIII (II.5).

English medieval swords are rare and although the original sword’s find site is unknown, it is definitely of English origin because of its decoration. The copper alloy cross-guard is decorated with mythical creatures, probably including a gryphon and a wyvern. Importantly it also features ‘babewyns’, grotesque creatures without bodies but having heads with tiny legs coming from their necks. Similar ‘babewyns’ appear in contemporary English manuscript illustrations.

  • Sword in the Stone Letter Opener

Excalibur (meaning to 'cut steel') was the great sword of King Arthur which 'gave light like 30 torches'. In the Arthurian stories, the name is given to two different swords - the one that the young king pulled from the anvil set in the stone before the church, and so proved his right to the kingship; and the other which the king took from the arm that rose above the surface of the lake, 'clothed in white samite, mystic, wonderful' and which eventually received back the sword when Arthur was dying.

Our Excalibur Letter Opener in Stone is inspired by this age-old legend. It has a brass hilt with blue detailing and a decorated shiny stainless steel blade that will make light work of all but the toughest of envelopes. The hand-painted resin stone features a velveteen base.

    Letter Opener Length: 28cm
    Stone Height: 8cm
    Stone Length: 9cm
    Stone Width: 8.5cm
    Total Height: 32cm
