Based on the original Henry VIIl Sabre (IX.634), which is part of the museum's collection, and dates to 1500AD, this miniature replica is produced from stainless steel and features a slightly curved grip and a 'beaked' pommel. The cross-guard exhibits a serpentine design which leads to a, 24cm long, curved blade (which is blunt for safety). The fuller of the blade is shallow and runs two-thirds of its length.
Weapons such as the original Sabre are illustrated in Flemish or South German manuscripts and the engraving on this particular blade has been compared to that visible on the armour of King Henry VIII (II.5).

English medieval swords are rare and although the original sword’s find site is unknown, it is definitely of English origin because of its decoration. The copper alloy cross-guard is decorated with mythical creatures, probably including a gryphon and a wyvern. Importantly it also features ‘babewyns’, grotesque creatures without bodies but having heads with tiny legs coming from their necks. Similar ‘babewyns’ appear in contemporary English manuscript illustrations.
English, mid 13th century.

Mini replica of a hand-and-a-half sword with 'writhen' hilt. This is based upon a knightly sword of a rare type, with its gilt-bronze pommel and cross-guard formed to look like three rods twisted together. The wooden grip is carved to resemble a writhen (twisted) stave and it also bears a gilt-bronze collar at its centre.
