Vegvisir Viking Shield

The vegvísir, meaning “wayfinder” in Icelandic, is a mystical symbol from Iceland designed to guide individuals through challenging weather conditions. Recorded in the Huld Manuscript discovered by Geir Vigfusson in Akureyri in 1860, the symbol’s origins are not traced earlier than this manuscript.

A page from the manuscript displays an illustration of the vegvísir, provides its name, and states in prose that carrying this symbol ensures one’s orientation even amidst storms or adverse weather, even when the path ahead is unfamiliar.
