Description
Details
Our Red Dragon swords feature high carbon EN42J Spring Steel blades that have been forged and tempered to perform like their historical counterparts. They have a core hardness of 45HRC approx. with an edge hardness of 50HRC approx. The hilts feature authentically styled forged guards and pommels constructed from steel, and wooden grips that are masterfully wrapped in leather cord for an aesthetic yet comfortable finish. They come complete with leather wrapped wooden scabbards and authentically styled integrated leather belts.
Our Red Dragon Combat “Bastard Sword” is designed to replicate a 13th-century longsword. The broad blade is designed for slashing, and excels at this when sharpened. The 1mm edge makes this sword useable for HEMA (drilling not sparring) and stage combat, although some light surface nicks are inevitable due to the thinness of the edge. If being used for either of these disciplines, we would recommend rounding off the tip for safety.

As for the sword and scabbard - I like many others was attracted to the sword initially by the price but also by Matt Eastons recommendation . Upon receiving it I had realised that I might aswell have bought a scabbard that came with a free sword - the scabbard itself if very high quality leather work and worth the price by itself . The sword is lovely - well balanced for the most part and feels very nice in the hand both two handed and one . It rattles slightly in the scabbard if shaken enough but is no issue - it is nicely snug in there and doesn't come out unless drawn .
I opted out of the sharpening service so I can't comment on that but otherwise the sword is solid . Red dragon does have a trusted reputation with their HEMA items and the blade does deliver on that reputation here - I would highly recommend . (Posted on 14/06/2024) - Amazing Review by Paul

First thing to say is this sword not budget in any way it’s quite amazing quality for the price well above what I was expecting.
My sword is flawless from the pommel to the tip of the blade everything is perfectly in line from the pommel to Guard to fullers everything is straight and true and tight the peen smooth and almost blended away.
The scabbard is also excellently well made of lovely leather and wood without a single blemish or scratch the belt is also of thick and strong leather.
Overall the quality of this sword is exceptional well above the pice.
I also had my sword sharpened by the knight shop
And wow when they say sharp they mean sharp,
No showing the sword the sharpener the putting it back in the box no not here mine was pretty much razor sharp.

The value of this sword is incredible, the leather work alone would cost more than the entire thing if commissioned individually, I sharpened the sword myself and it’s produces a beautiful strong sharp edge, when you look down the blade you can see the forging marks, it adds great character to the blade, I often see videos about Albion blades being the best blah blah, don’t waste your money, get one of these, you cannot beat it for value, it is slightly blade heavy but it cuts beautifully and handles very well, I plan on getting another 3 of these over time I love it soo much. I had an issue with the scabbard but the team at the Sword shop handled it with no fuss and were extremely helpful. They are my first port of call for swords and blades. Scabbard has quite a few scratches and dents. Nothing major though. Crossguard and pommel have very minor imperfections but overall the sword is of good quality.
My biggest qualm though is the sharpening. I got it extra as I wanted the blade properly sharpened. However, it came out very uneven and worst of all, the tip and the last ~7cm of the blade is completely blunt. I wouldn't mention it if it was just badly sharpened but it is blunt as a practice sword and that is a bit disappointing. This is an excellent sword, great weight to it and all the build materials are very good.
This is a brilliant starter sword and I whole heartily recommend this to anyone - you will not be disappointed !
As an aside, the staff @ TheKnightShop were very helpful as I had pre-ordered this sword and took many months to be delivered. They were very forth coming and clear with their communications during this process. (Posted on 24/11/2020) - Decent sword, Amazing price Review by BjornTheBear

First off the issues I have with the blade are a slight discoloration of the steel close to the top of the fuller on both sides of the blade as well as a couple of scratch marks on the crossguard I'm assuming were gained during the manufacturing process. Neither is a major concern especially considering the price and overall finish of the work.
Handles well in the cut if used with correct technique and edge alignment, due to the spring steel construction any mistake's in hand position will result in considerable vibration traveling through the blade. This is entirely dependent on user skill and I've found that with careful practice and patience it can be avoided.
