It was likely used with a gorget without bevor and belonged to the collection of the Count of Nieuwerkerke, and acquired by Sir Richard Wallace in 1871. Some variations of this item were used with coif instead of aventail. This design is based on several artistic representations dating from the first quarter of the 14th century and is common in the Spanish peninsula.
