Medieval Reenactment Kit

Medieval Reenactment Kit

Our Medieval Re-enactment section features historical replicas from brands such as GDFB, Marshal Historical and Windlass Steelcrafts and provide a good balance between authenticity and affordability. Medieval Re-enactment battles are known for their brutal clashes of steel and the protective standards of the kit reflect this. Helmets are usually required to be a minimum of 18 gauge steel, with people favouring the thicker 14 and 16 gauge options available in this section. On these pages you will find a range of Medieval weaponry, armour, clothing and jewellery that is approved for Battlefield Re-enactment or Living History by re-enactment societies around the world.

  • 15th Century Ring Hilt Longsword

The 15th Century Ring Hilt Longsword differs from other longswords of the period in that it features “side rings” on either side of the guard. These rings provided greater protection to the hands without adding much weight to the sword. Over time, the addition of greater hand protection led more complex hit designs such as those seen on swept and basket hilt swords.

This longsword has a hand forged high carbon fullered steel blade (not tempered) with a triple fullered ricasso.  The bottom half of the grip is wrapped in black leather. The top half is wire-bound for a more decorative finish and greater purchase. This sword comes complete with a well-made wooden scabbard wrapped in black leather with steel fittings and belt rings. This item has a blunt blade and is manufactured for display only.

  • Practical Bastard Sword

By customer request Paul Chen has produced a re-enactment version of our SH2250 Bastard sword. The blade is forged in 5160 high-carbon steel, to minimize burring, and the transverse thickness of the guard has been increased, both to provide adequate strength for re-enactment use and to present a safer profile at the ends of the guard.

Another innovation is the provision of an all-leather scabbard, in contrast with the rigid scabbards normally provided with our Practical swords - this is designed both to provide an extra margin of safety when combatants fall on the scabbard in battle and also to minimze the need for replacement scabbards. The sword is supplied with the grip and scabbard in a neutral-colored leather to allow customization to the owners taste.

  • Practical Hand-and-a-Half Sword

    2 Review(s)

The Practical broadswords are all based on authentically styled swords in our Paul Chen collection but they are tailored to meet the needs of re-enactment and stage combat. These very popular and affordable weapons feature authentic hilt styling, with fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blades. They are designed to withstand rugged use while providing the level of safety required by many of today’s re-enactment societies.

The blades are crafted from 1065 high-carbon steel, hardened to 50HRC, which restricts edge-notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and protection against brittleness. While the blades are substantial, they are fullered to provide balance and good handling characteristics. They feature 1/16” wide edges and rounded tips for safety. The tangs are also substantial, with radiused corners at the blade shoulders and no welds. The end of the tang is riveted over the pommel, which both eliminates any possibility of inadvertent disassembly. The hardwood grips are leather-covered.

  • Gallowglass Sword

The word Gallowglass is an Anglicisation of the Irish word Gallóglaigh meaning “foreign soldiers”. They were mercenary warrior elite among Scottish clans living in the Highlands and Western Isles between the 13th and 16th century. During the 13th century they started to settle in Ireland where military chieftains would frequently use them as bodyguards as they were not subject to local feuds or influences.

A description from 1600, speaks of the Gallowglass as "...pycked and scelected men of great and mightie bodies, crewell without compassion. The greatest force of the battell consisteth in them, chosing rather to dye than to yeelde, so that when yt cometh to handy blowes they are quickly slayne or win the fielde." They were famed for using their broadswords or claymores ("claíomh mór" - Gailic for “Great Sword”) with terrifying effect in battle.

  • Two Handed Scottish Claymore

The Claymore (from the Scottish Gaelic claidheamh-mòr, meaning “great sword”) is a Scottish variant of the late medieval 2 handed sword. It differed from other longswords of the period in that it usually had forward sloping quillons terminating in quatrefoils. Claymores were in use during constant clan warfare and fights with the English from the 15th to 17th century. Claymores did exist as early as the Wars of Scottish Independence although they were smaller and few had the characteristic quatrefoil design. The last time that claymores were seen on the battlefield in any significant number was the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689.

Our Two Handed Scottish Claymore has a hand-forged high carbon steel blade topped with solid steel hilt fittings and a stained real wood grip. This sword has a blunt blade and is designed for display only.

  • Stage Combat Knights Templar Arming Sword

Our Stage Combat swords feature tempered, high carbon steel blades and are designed for light combat use. They have durable, thick edges, more than suitable for the rigours of stage combat and display fights. They also feature rounded tips for extra safety. Stage Combat swords are noticeably heavier than historical replicas due to the added weight afforded by the thicker edges. These swords are not designed for re-enactment use.

Our Knights Templar Arming Sword features an unsharpened carbon steel blade with central fuller. The grip is wood wrapped in brown leather and flanked with a steel guard and pommel. The pommel is emblazoned with an enamelled Templar red cross. Comes complete with wooden scabbard wrapped in brown leather with polished steel fittings.
