The sgian dubh or Scottish black knife became fashionable in the mid-1700s. It is also called a Scottish sock knife because people carried them in their hose or boots. The Disarming Acts, enacted for the purpose of disarming Catholic rebels in their Scottish nests, prohibited Highlanders from owning or carrying weapons. They were forced to conceal the weapons they secretly kept. This traditional sgian dubh features a black wooden grip with a basketweave pattern that is shaped for grasping and comes with its own scabbard. The blade has the filework characteristic of Scottish edged weapons, and the hilt is decorated with a thistle motif.
