During the course of the 16th century, the rapier slowly eclipsed the classic sword as a gentleman's weapon of choice. As part of this development thrusting techniques gradually replaced cutting techniques, which meant that a shield was too bulky to be effective. Swordsmen who used rapiers often held daggers in their left hands for parrying their opponents' thrusts.
This rapier has a double-edged blade and a ricasso. The three fullers in the ricasso are as effective as they are decorative: they improve the rapier's balance. The cup is delicately etched with a cross and fleur de lis, and the knuckle bow provides gracefully effective protection – even for fingers placed on the ricasso. The grip of this rapier with cup hilt is wrapped with fine wire, and the sword is designed to be wielded with both the left and right hands. Our rapier comes with a scabbard, and for your left hand, we also have a parrying dagger to match (sold separately).
