Windlass Steelcrafts

The Knight Shop is a distributor for Windlass Steelcrafts and the premier retailer of Windlass Swords for sale in the UK. Windlass Swords (Windlass Steelcrafts), are based in India and are one of the oldest sword manufacturers still in production. They were established in 1943 to supply kukris to the British Army. Over the decades they have expanded to become one of the largest suppliers of military swords in the world. They are also well known for making high quality licensed replicas of swords, armour and historical clothing seen in Hollywood movies.

Their swords are forged from high quality, high carbon steel and tempered with the most advanced heat treating process available. They are flexible, well balanced and lightweight making them ideal for practicing historical swordplay techniques. Windlass Swords are durable and are either of threaded or peened construction with the tang forged as part of the blade. They are blunt and have a 1mm edge although sharpening service is available on these swords.

  • Confederate Sabre

    2 Review(s)

Our Confederate saber would have been primarily used by soldiers riding for famous generals like Jeb Stuart, Wade Hampton and Nathan Bedford Forrest. They taught the Yankees the meaning of fear. This Confederate saber is lightweight (approx. 1 kg) and manageable. The back is relatively broad up to the center of percussion (CoP), which makes the blade extremely stable. And the fuller, which also stops at the CoP, is responsible for the reduced weight and resulting manageability.

The blade curves more acutely as it nears the point, which magnifies the saber's cutting power. An accurate reproduction of a historical weapon (s. William Albaugh, "Confederate Edged Weapons", p. 137), the hand guard, the pommel, and even the wire wrapped around the brown leather that covers the grip are made of brass.

  • American Revolutionary War Sabre

    2 Review(s)

Dated to around 1775, the prototype for this handsome sabre is pictured in "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution," a book by George C. Neumann that is very popular with collectors and sword fans. The single-edged, subtly curved blade has two fullers. A narrow, deep fuller almost runs along the entire length of the blade. The other one is shorter, shallower, and much wider. Because of them, this amazing saber weighs less than one kilogram.

Nevertheless, our American Revolutionary War sabre is perfectly balanced for delivering mighty cuts: like most powerful cutting weapons, it is slightly top-heavy. The spiraling wooden grip is comfortable and easy to control, and the knuckle bow provides added hand protection.

  • Spartan Lakonia Short Sword

    7 Review(s)

The Spartans developed a short sword that is extraordinarily effective in close combat. The leaf-shaped, double-edged blade has an acute point and is well balanced due to the combination of the short, downward curving crossguard and bronze grip.

Our Spartan short sword dates from around 500 BC and includes a leather-covered scabbard made of wood. The metal band has rings so you can attach the sword and scabbard to a belt. This Spartan sword is based on the one illustrated in "The Spartan Army," a book by Nicholas Sekunda with illustrations by Richard Hook.

  • Classic Scottish Dirk

The dirk used during the Scottish Renaissance is an advanced development of the kidney dagger and emerged in this form toward the end of the 16th century. Our classic Scottish dirk has a single-edged blade with a fuller offset toward the back edge. Turned to fit most hands very well, the grip is made of hardwood and the decorated, riveted pommel is made of steel.

The scabbard, on the other hand, is made of leather. Its mount and chape are made of metal, and it also has a device for attaching the whole ensemble (dirk and scabbard) comfortably to a belt.

  • Sword of General Maximus

At 76 cm long, this sword of tempered carbon steel is very long for a weapon from this era. To this end, Maximus' sword cannot be classed with the gladius style widely in use at the time, but is rather an early version of the longer spatha. Whereas the grip design does indeed align with the Roman gladius with its lathe-turned imitation ivory and the half spherical cross guard.

The latter as well as the pommel are made of beautifully grained wood with a red brown varnish and have typical Roman brass ornaments. This decoration continues in the brass details on the scabbard. The leather of the scabbard and matching sword belt are in the same red brown tone as the wooden elements of the grip.
