  • Viking Varangian Helmet Butted

Our reproduction is directly inspired by an original found in a 10th-century Slavic-Varangian settlement named Gnezdovo or Gnyozdovo near Smolensk in modern-day Russia. Many typical Scandinavian artefacts have been found simultaneously with this helmet, making it a good choice for anyone wanting to reenact an eastern Viking / Varangian / Russ / Slav character. However, this helmet may not be suitable if you’re depicting a Western Viking raiding England.

This helmet is HANDMADE from 1.6 mm (16-gauge) mild steel and lined with an adjustable genuine leather liner. A butted mail aventail hangs from it, protecting the lower part of the face. An approximate circumference of 68 cm (without liner) (65 cm with liner) allows it to fit most head circumferences from about 58cm to 61-62cm, depending on the shape of the wearer’s head. (If you desire to wear an additional padded cap, then measure your head circumference while wearing it). A genuine leather chin strap, with a solid brass buckle, keeps it in place battle after battle. It has a height of about 25.5 cm (without aventail), the inner width at ear level is about 21 cm, and the inner depth from front to back at eye level measures about 24.5 cm.

Note: This product is carefully coated with a layer of oil when packaged that acts as a temporary (protective) layer against corrosion (rust), which can easily be wiped off using any oil remover or even a dry cloth.

  • German Sallet - 16 gauge

Between 1450 and 1500 no one went to war without wearing at least one form of head protection, usually barbute or sallet. There were many different designs depending on the origin of the item but some, as the one shown here, had simple but effective designs.
