  • German Sallet - 16 gauge

Between 1450 and 1500 no one went to war without wearing at least one form of head protection, usually barbute or sallet. There were many different designs depending on the origin of the item but some, as the one shown here, had simple but effective designs.

Made of 1.6mm steel. Steel thickness may vary due to the handcrafted methods used in its manufacture. The steel is untreated and may have rust. To protect the steel you may rub it with mineral or synthetic oil. Leather chin strap included.

  • Open Face Sallet - 16 gauge

The sallet was a war helmet that replaced the bascinet in Italy, western and northern Europe and Hungary during the mid-15th century. In Italy, France and England the armet helmet was also popular, but in Germany, the sallet became almost universal. The large amount of artistic representation and original pieces indicate that even with a slight German predominancy, this was a common choice of helmet throughout Europe. This specific model, with back tail and without a visor, was commonly used by infantry and mercenaries due to its versatility.

Made of 1.6mm steel. Steel thickness may vary due to the handcrafted methods used in its manufacture.

This helmet is of the type known as an archer's helm. This shape was commonly seen during the Wars of the Roses in England from 1455 to 1485. The rounded top and flared neck guard provided protection from missiles coming from above, while the wide face opening allowed for the unimpeded vision necessary for an accurate aim. This premium helmet features an attached liner and chin-strap in natural leather. Reproduced in steel, it is fully wearable by most adults.

  • Crusader Great Helm - 16 gauge - Brass

The Great Helm, which began to be seen on the battlefield as early as the 13th century on its earliest forms proved to be a winning design to be used almost for the next three centuries. It was most commonly worn over a chainmail coif or skull cap. It was usually built with 4 riveted pieces with flat top. It has a fierce-looking fixed visor that enhanced the already intimidating look of a charging knight. Our Crusader Great Helm was inspired by an original piece dated from the middle 13th century found in Pomerania that is now on display in the Historisches Museum of Berlin. This style of helmet was usually seen in the middle 13th century until the beginning of 14th century and can be seen in documents such as the Codex Manesse, the Maziejowsky Bible or the Cantigas.

Our Crusader Great Helm is constructed from 16 gauge steel making it perfect for re-enactment. It features a padded liner and adjustable leather chin strap.

    Inner circumference: 64cm

All sizes are approximate and may vary from piece to piece.
