Marshal Historical Helmets

The Norman "Nasal" Helmet was based on earlier Viking Helmet designs and could be worn over a chainmail coif or with chainmail aventail to protect the neck.

The nasal bar was designed to protect the face but meant that Knights were often unrecognisable. The famous Bayeux Tapestry shows William the Conqueror tipping his helmet back to reveal his face and prove to his soldiers that he was still alive!

There are several examples of conical helmets with large facial visors. This one in particular is based on one found in the magnificent Romanesque portico of the church of Santa María la Real, in Sangüessa (Navarra). In the exterior archivolt you can see the professions of medieval society, including two armed men. One of them wearing a helmet like the one shown here. Other very similar ones can be seen in some codices of the same period.

This unusual Crusades era Spangenhelm, based on an early 13th century example, is provided with a ventilated faceplate, so providing full facial protection. It is constructed from 14 gauge steel with a suspension liner and chinstrap.

The Kettle Hat was favoured by the English infantryman and man at arms throughout the medieval period and was popular during the 100 Years War. It was simple to manufacture and offered good protection against projectiles. This design was so effective that it came back into service with the British military in World War 1 and 2. The name derives from the Germanic word “cetel” or “cietel” alluding to its deep cauldron like shape. It was also known as a “war hat” and “Chapel-de-fer” (hat of iron).

Our Battle Bascinet is great for SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) or re-enactment. Although it is based on a historical model, combat specialists have modified this helmet turning it into an essential piece for any battle or melee. It provides maximum protection without sacrificing an iota of vision.

The visor can be removed quickly and easily if required by removing the hinge pins. The visor also has a locking system that holds it in place when raised. When the visor is lowered it is held closed by a hook on one side and a buckled strap on the other for extra security. Constructed from 14 gauge steel with a satin finish. Features a well-padded lining and buckled leather chin strap.

Our Sugar Loaf Helmet is hand crafted from 14 gauge steel (for the skull) and 16 gauge steel for rest of the helmet. The brass cross is also 14 gauge. Our Churburg Bascinet dates from approximately 1360 - 1390 and is based on a helmet that is part of a suit of armour that can be found in the Matsh family castle. It is constructed from 14 gauge steel making it perfect for the re-enactment field.

Our skull of our Great Bascinet is constructed from 12 gauge steel making is incredibly durable. The rest of the helmet is constructed from 14 gauge steel.
