Sallets

The Sallet appeared during the middle of the 15th century and gradually replaced the bascinet throughout Europe. It was also known Celata, Salade and Schaller. It was popular in England, France and Italy and was almost universally worn in Germany. We offer one of the largest selections of Medieval Sallets available to buy in the UK. Our Sallets are available in both 14 and 16 gauge steel making them perfect for re-enactment. They are available with a variety of different styled face protection such as Bellows faced or Jawbone visors, or with no visors at all (for archers). We also offer a great selection of Bevors that were often worn with Sallets to offer complete head and throat protection.

  • Open Face Sallet - 16 gauge

The sallet was a war helmet that replaced the bascinet in Italy, western and northern Europe and Hungary during the mid-15th century. In Italy, France and England the armet helmet was also popular, but in Germany, the sallet became almost universal. The large amount of artistic representation and original pieces indicate that even with a slight German predominancy, this was a common choice of helmet throughout Europe.

This specific model, with back tail and without a visor, was commonly used by infantry and mercenaries due to its versatility.

  • Late Transitional Sallet - 14 gauge

    1 Review(s)

Near to the end of 15th-century, sallets began a transformation into the shapes known as "transitional". This replica is based on a piece known as A72 from the Wallace Collection dated on 1520 and is attributed to have been manufactured in the north of Italy. It was likely used with a gorget without bevor and belonged to the collection of the Count of Nieuwerkerke, and acquired by Sir Richard Wallace in 1871. This style of sallet can be seen in the painting by Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc in his piece “Castles and Warfare in the Middle Ages”.

Made of 2mm steel with a 1.6mm steel faceplate. Steel thickness may vary due to the handcrafted methods used in its manufacture. The steel is untreated and may have rust. To protect the steel you may rub it with a mineral or synthetic oil. Leather chin strap included.
